Other Therapies for Angiosarcoma
FREE Case Review
Because angiosarcoma is so rare and aggressive a cancer, there is not much opportunity to study how different avenues of treatment affect it. Fortunately cancer in general is better understood each day, and breakthroughs in other areas of the disease often translate into more options for victims of angiosarcoma.
Even medical science cannot account for the healing properties of many nontraditional cancer treatments. . Depending on the location and extent of the angiosarcoma, a combination of traditional, revolutionary, and unconventional treatments can work the best. Some newer treatments for angiosarcoma include:
- Immunotherapy: This type of treatment concentrates on boosting the body’s natural defenses, but has had limited use on angiosarcoma.
- Radiofrequency ablation: A needle is inserted into the tumor, where high intensity radio waves or laser light emit heats and kills the cancerous cells.
- Chemoembolisation. This treatment is primarily used for angiosarcoma of the liver, the most common cancer caused by vinyl chloride. Chemotherapy drugs are mixed with an oily chemical and injected into branches of the liver artery that supplies the tumor with blood. The oil 'holds' the chemotherapy drugs longer in the liver, increasing the effectiveness in killing the tumor.
- Cryotherapy. A small metal object filled with liquid nitrogen is inserted into the tumor. The extreme cold of the liquid nitrogen kills the cancer causing cells.
What is now commonplace once seemed futuristic, ineffective, or outlandish. As angiosarcoma is better understood, many doctors and patients alike hope that these treatments will offer more hope to victims of one of the rarest and deadliest forms of cancer.
