Liver Disease

Liver cancer is one of the most aggressive and dangerous cancers. The liver is one of the most important organs in the body; located above the stomach, the liver is essentially a large processing center that filters impurities and foreign contaminants out of the blood, but it also helps regulate metabolism, protein and chemical storage, and bile production.
Once a chemical enters the body, be it a medication, be it aspirin, alcohol, or vinyl chloride, it eventually enters the bloodstream where it is filtered by the liver. In normal quantities small chemicals are processed and turned into waste products and sent to the kidneys for disposal. If the amounts exceed normal capacity they begin to damage the cells of the liver, which will eventually kill the organ. The liver is a hardy organ, so it usually takes many years and high levels of toxins to affect the liver. Vinyl chloride is particularly dangerous, because it directly affects the cells of the liver, and can cause liver cancer.
Once vinyl chloride damages liver cells, tumors can begin to form across the organ inhibiting proper function. Liver cancer can take an immense toll on the body, and is especially dangerous because its proximity to so many blood vessels provides ample opportunities for the cancer to mestastize, or spread through the blood to other healthy tissues. Early detection is critically important, but because there are often few outward symptoms screening is especially difficult. If caught early enough liver cancer can be treated through chemotherapy and radiation, but severe cases usually require removal of the organ.
In any event, liver cancer is extremely serious. If you have suffered damage to your liver because of exposure to toxic chemicals, you need to contact a lawyer in your area before it is too late.
