When one thinks of the dangers of the chemical industry, the immediate images conjured up include huge factories full of billowing steam, large caldrons of boiling liquids, and workers in cumbersome protective suits. One place that does not quickly spring to mind are beauty shops. It is true that many beauty salons are full of chemicals, most are mild and certainly not life threatening, but up until 1974 they were some of the most dangerous places in the country.
Until the 1970s, one of the most proliferated uses of vinyl chloride was as a propellant for aerosol cans. The ability of vinyl chloride to cause extreme health problems in high concentrations during manufacturing was well documented, but the risk of merely inhaling low quantities was relatively unknown. Although the average aerosol can contained a low level of VC, multiple cans used repeatedly in areas of little ventilation caused the air of many beauty salons to exceed the recommended levels of safe exposure. In fact, it was the appearance of diseases such as angiosarcoma, acroosteolysis, and Raynaud's syndrome in beauty shop workers that aided researchers in confirming vinyl chloride caused severe health problems.
Unfortunately, significant damage was already done by the time VC was banned as a propellant. Years of constant exposure to this deadly chemical causes diseases such as angiosarcoma that do not appear for decades after initial contact. Making things worse, by the time these diseases appear they are far too advanced to respond to treatments.
Vinyl Chloride poisoning is still claiming lives. If you or a loved one suffers from exposure to this toxic chemical, you have a right to seek compensation from the irresponsible companies who concealed the dangers of their products. Contact a lawyer in your state today.
