Aside from ionizing radiation, the only outside cause of brain cancer is vinyl chloride. Cancer of any part of the body is of course devastating, but when it affects the brain it is even more insidious. Brain cancer is especially difficult to detect because there are usually few indications of internal damage until the cancer is significantly advanced. The complicated tissues and fluids that protect and nourish the brain are extremely delicate, and when the body absorbs foreign contaminants they are usually the first affected. Brain tumors are so dangerous even non-cancerous benign tumors eventually become malignant, destroying healthy brain tissue in the process.
Vinyl chloride is known to cause to brain tumors because it affects the central nervous system. When the chemical is inhaled, it travels into the bloodstream and immediately suppresses the central nervous system, causing effects similar to drunkenness. Sufficient quantities will eventually affect the brain itself, setting off a chain reaction that all too often results in a brain tumor. As the tumor grows and becomes more complex, victims may exhibit symptoms of epilepsy, paralysis, double vision, headaches, or dementia, but the location and size of the tumor dictates the effects it will have on the body. Curiously, the more negative effects a tumor has on the body allows earlier detection, which in turn provides doctors more opportunity to treat it.
